Having driven diesels both new and old and driving an old one on a daily basis I can tell you that the difference is in the fuel. I can tell when I have cheated and stopped at a place that does not stock a high quality diesel fuel as it stinks really bad in the Quantum. Personally, I try to run fuel from only one local retailer as I have developed a relationship with the owner and know that there is a commitment to the quality of fuel. In addition to the smell from a poor quality of fuel it also does not lubricate as well and this can contribute to engine wear. Buy quality fuel and you will not have the stink. Will you still know that it is a diesel? Yes. But will it be unbearable? No.
