My father has one, '10 TDI AUTO. He loves it, gets really good mileage (38-45 MPG) range, but he drives on the highways of TX between 60-65 MPH. When I went shopping with him for it, it was really hard to find a 6MT Jetta TDI. The only one they had was a used one that was selling more than the DSG AUTO which is ludicrous. If you choose to go down that route, it may take some time to find one.

I drove one and totally loved it. But I have not been in a new Ford Fusion Hybrid so I am not willing to say it is the best high fuel efficiency out there.

I was hoping to have one ordered with the 6spd stick.... The only thing that gets me about hybrids is the batteries.

The newest Hyundai Sonata Hybrid is probably going to blow the top on the hybrid business. To me, it is the best version of a hybrid that does not feel like it is inadequate. Saw the specs on that thing at the NYC Autoshow and it is nice. It is quick, very fuel efficient, and uses the newest battery technology (lighter lithium polymer batteries). Thing is powered by the 2.0L Turbo Hybrid that produces 274HP and bests the city mileage rating of the Fusion (37/39 MPG).

Default VW TDI is an Option, sort-of

Have a Jetta TDI and love it. An while a new VW TDI is on my backup list it's not a 4x4, not a truck. Is a fun car to drive. Mine is a 5-spd.

Recently test drove a 2010 manual and auto and while I have always purchased manuals the 6-spd auto in sport mode with manual shifting is unreal . . . great fun and power. On the down side the 2010 Jetta is heavier and a bit ugly compared to the 2001 . . . MPG is also down some. The '01 gets 44/45 city and 47/52 highway and it has 125k miles on it . . . '10 will never get those numbers. More weight, more EPA stuff, more HP = less MPG.

If the TR20 is not up to the quality level I'm hoping for and if Ford won't bring us a Ranger diesel (my 1st pick backup, 2nd pick is Tacoma diesel) , then my next vehicle could be another VW TDI. Do know the VW will be a great highway ride . . . but not to great for wood cutting/hunting/ get out-there rock crawling.

I think you are crossing your vehicles up. The Sonata hybrid gets equal combined MPG with the Ford Fusion but the Ford is better in the city 41 vs 37. The motor is also not a turbo 2.0 That is only for the SE and Limted and has nothing to do with the hybrid version at all. The hybrid uses and Atkinson cycle 2.4 motor

Whoops, did get it confused with the V6 replacement. I know the new Sonata hybrid looks good on paper and in person though. The redesign of the new Sonata is top in its class coupled with the new battery technology, should be a good car.

agreed. I think they need some additional chassis development to get the handling and feeling just right but on an over all basis it has to be the number 1 or 2 car in its class. This might change over the next couple of years as other introduce new models but what I have seen from Hyundai/Kia over the past decade has been substantial and I have a feeling they will continue to perform above par until they are on top of the world.

Default hybrid vehicles

I for one have no interest in the hybrid market. Yes they be slightly more efficient for in town driving but my 04 Corolla gets 35-40 highway. That is good mileage and the upside is I don't have to drop $5-6000 5 years down the road on batteries. It is a novel idea but if they can't be produced cheaper then they just don't pencil out. The environmental impact difference is probably(my uneducated opinion) negligable do to the hazardous production of the batteries. There will no doubt be someone here who will argue my points, so educate me with the facts.=)
