Register to stop seeing this ad! Hey guys I need your opinion on this.As I was trying to show my wife the photos of my future truck today, and she tells me that is ugly, why not get a F150 that is prettier, etc... but when I told her that the main reason that I want to buy it, is because of being a Diesel truck. Well, she did not like that a bit, she told me that she can't stand the smell of diesel and that the inside of this truck it will more likely smell like Diesel and she will never ride on it !! Well, my first thought was GREAT , but you all know that will not do...So, I know that I will have to wait to see what this truck will be like, etc. But does anyone have experience with diesel trucks??? Does it really smell like diesel inside of the cabin?? It sucks, because I really like the smell and sound of diesel. I am telling you, between Mahindra itself and now my wife, I fell like I will never get this dam truck! Thanks for your input! |

I drive a 2002 Dodge Ram every day. Doesn't smell like a diesel inside the cab at all
You shouldn't have to worry about that with a newer diesel pickup. When the new, US versions come out, get her on a test drive in one. Maybe get to the lot ahead of time and wrap a pretty pink bow it?

After 2007, the new diesel pickups pretty much lost their "diesel smelling" exhaust.
Thanks in part to DPF's, catalytic converters, cleaner burning engines, and, coming next year, Urea injection! If you stand behind a new diesel pickup when it's running, you'd be hard pressed to pick up a "diesel smell". The other thing though to run past her is the operating cost of a diesel over a truck. If the Mahindra get's 30 MPG and a standard F-150 gets maybe 18-19 at best, do the math with her & let her see how much money you'd be saving in fuel mileage savings driving a diesel over a gas engine. Also, diesel engines last significantly longer (they're built much stronger and generally turn at much lower RPM's than their gas counterparts so you get less revolutions per given mile and a stronger engine), which means having a diesel engine under the hood means longer engine life. In fact, there's several diesel engine vehicles that have in excess of 500K on them and are still running great. In many cases, it's the truck that wears out around the engine long before the engine bites the dust. This was the case with all of the Isuzu pickups I owned. The engines ran strong well past the time when the truck had pretty much disintegrated around it from rust. But, the smell is a big thing with people that haven't driven modern diesels. It's pretty much a thing of the past though. As for the clattering diesel motor....well, I wish ya luck on that one. I absolutely LOVE the sound of a diesel engine rattling away. The noisier the better. It's a "man's Engine". Heck, the sound of a cold diesel engine firing up on a cold morning has always been music to my ears. Best of luck! The diesel smell? Doesn't happen unless you stick the gas nozzle through the window and give it a squirt or two. Oh, and I'd dog you about being P-whipped, but who the hell am I to talk? (my wife told me to write that part) |

If she's like my wife, she'll probably have a change of heart when she sees one in person. I think the look is part of the appeal, kind of like a puppy dog.
I agree with TX. Have her test a VW TDI and when she gets back tell her it's got the same type of motor as the Mahindra. |

Your wife is misinformed. (I have more choice words about your wife's attitude towards diesels, but being this is my first post as a new user, I thought I should be nice)
Modern diesels don't have the noise, smell, or mess, precisely because of people just like her. Tell her, don't knock it until she's tried it. The only way you'll get diesel smell inside is if you douse yourself with diesel fuel. |

Thanks guys, you have helped me to feel hopeful again!
I am very glad to know that the new ones does not smell, or not as the old ones! Thanks for the great idea! I will tell her that we are going to test drive a gas model, and after the test drive (hopefuly no complain from smell) than I tell her that she had "been pranked!" and have just finish a test drive in a Diesel truck !!! ![]() Thanks again guys!! |

Good luck! I think she'll be amazed at how quiet the TDI's are.
Also, the Duramax engines are nearly as quiet as their gas counterparts and have GOBS of power. Might be worth test driving one of those to see what she thinks. I know with all the Duramax, Powerstrokes, Cummins I've ever driven I've never been able to smell "the diesel smell" in the cab. |

My first thought was does her gas car smell like gas?
My diesel truck does have a smell all its own, but diesel isnt the culprit. My wife thinks the trucks ugly.My kids thinks the trucks ugly. If I get one maybe they wont want to drive it, and knowone will want me to help them move. |
