Well, it is currently 2010, and it is also winter . . . I think the information may be old and refers to when they were going to launch earlier.

Default Thank you!

This is the most info. we've gotten on thse things in quite a while! Thank you. If you know (and can tell), do you have the technical specs on the engine? We know it's a 2.2 L TD, but almost nothing else. Injection system and injector type, bore and stroke, boost pressure, cam gears/chain/belt, compression ratio etc etc...
We've been living in this information desert for a looong time. Anything you can throw us is appreciated!

welcome to the site!

Default Toyota has to do something

Look I've been following the mahindra since fall '08, signed up for a test drive, drive a gas guzzling T-100, contractor, etc.... still nothing. I am well aware of the difficulties inherent to bringing a new vehicle to market in the U. S. but the lack of credible information is getting to be a bore. Maybe the answer for those of us looking for a capable, reasonably high mileage 4X4 truck could stem from Toyota's current problems. They are going to have to do something to get folks' mind off the moment, how about that stripped down tacoma with either a payload or off road package and a turbo diesel. Follow that with a little Audi/Volks copy of a sedan?

I don't have much feeling about Edmunds suggested date of Winter 2010. I am glad and impressed that they have something on thier site. I think they possibly just playing it safe. I also noticed when visiting thier site when you click on the list of dealers there were no results.

As far as thier communications with everyone........ let me say this. As americans if we know something is going to take place (something of this magnitude especially) as early as december but as late as April we tell everyone December to April. The Indians say April. Don't laugh too hard but they really seem to live by the "Under promise/Over deliver philosophy. I'm sure that is far from how most everyone out there probably feels but it is my belief. Example, the cross county tour now has over 20,000 people signed up to attend (mahindrana.com). This was originally thought to take place last summer but still hasnt happend (discouraging I realize - for all of us). That was originally something Gloval Vehicles (the american counterpart) was managing. Now..... Mahindra (India) has taken over the plans. Probably to make sure that earlier (hard to live up to, impossible to predict for us) dates arent given to let anyone down. I've been in the car business since 1988 and can only imagine all the hoops Mahindra/Global Vehicles has to jump throught to get this think off the ground. Just think of the last time you had to renew you tags. The license bureau probably sent you back home to get something you didnt have only to tell you another thing you needed when you returned. While every Manufacturer is a little different some things are similar. You might be surprised to know that we heard of the recent Toyota recalls on the News before we heard anything from Toyota & and we have a Toyota dealership! I think most people think no news and assume bad things. I think this (importing a new make to the states) is a very big journey with many stops and a few surprises along the way. When you mix that with the under promise/over deliver philosophy you get a little dead air....and probably will for another couple months.

Thank you blue7.3 (I also have a 2000 7.3 350 in the barn - love that truck). I've been waiting for a site like this glad I found it.

As far as the engine question(s) the answer is you probably know as much as I do as far as specs. As far as the Injection system and type. Its pretty much the same as the Blue Tec system that Bosch designed for Benz. It’s the proprietary name for a series of engine technologies, filters, and catalysts that result in low emissions and high fuel economy. It starts with a high-pressure common-rail turbo direct injection diesel engine. "Common rail" refers to the method for injecting precisely the right amount of fuel directly into each cylinder at exactly the right moment. The turbocharger boosts horsepower, and the system recirculates the exhaust gas that powers it in order to consume any unburned fuel.

When exhaust gas leaves the engine, a multi-phase treatment process begins. By their nature, diesels tend to produce high levels of carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen known collectively as NOx, and particulate matter, also known as soot. Oxidation catalysts minimize the carbon monoxide and further reduce unburned hydrocarbons. A maintenance-free particulate filter, or soot trap, then reduces soot to nearly undetectable levels.

Bosch actually designed the whole engine I was unofficially told of course. Will post more info as I receive it.

Can't imagine a manufacturer sending thousands of vehicles without federal compliance. Maybe the 2000 vehicles are in part destined for the long awaited customer demos.

Still no reference to Mahindra on NHTSA. Any word on CAFE or crash tests results?

Default Crash tests

I asked the same question and I received "it went very well". Very unofficial and can't prove anything yet.

Here is an interesting article for anyone who has yet to see it. Mahindra to export Scorpio-based pick-ups to US by March'10-WheelsUnplugged Automobile Industry News

Does anybody know if Mahindra itself is offering extended warranties on this truck? Or is it a third party insurance company whihc will be left up to each dealer to decide? Being a new model (for US), I really think a 6 or 7 year 100,000 mile warrnaty is the way to go.

Default Service Contract

The factory warranty will be 4 years or 60,000 miles limited comprehensive (bumper to bumper). They have not given us dealers any additional service contract information. I'm sure by the time we have the trucks we'll know more. Warranty of 100,000 is a must I agree - I'll will post when I know more.

Bluetec, eh? well it seems to work for Mercedes. You mention that the particulate trap is self-cleaning. It doesn't use an after-burner to do that, does it? Many of us have seen the pics of the early Ford/Navistar 6.4s belching flames out their exhaust when the injector stuck on. Oh boy, what a waste of fuel!
Our 7.3s are common rails of course, although Ford/Navistar went a different direction by placing the rails IN the heads. Seems to work ok, but makes it harder to change-out injectors. If Mahindra is also using Piezo injectors, NEAT! VERY efficient technology.

Thanks again for the updates! It's all very much appreciated!

cheers!
