A somewhat longer answer is that the DEF systems have helped raise fuel mileage over the previous method of heavy EGR regulation in the big trucks, but overall it's probably lower by some amount then the pre-emissions days. Overall I'd bet that it's not a lot lower because even though the older trucks (like mine) have no EGR or catalysts, their fuel delivery systems weren't nearly as precise as modern systems... they didn't need to be, and the ("old") cheap way to make power on a diesel is to throw more fuel at it (other systems being modded accordingly) -pete

You say Dodge is still using fuel-based DPF regens like it's a GOOD thing... The only reason they didn't go to urea/DEF injection is because the 6.7 Cummins passed the 2010 emissions requirements right from the get-go. It still gets the same cruddy fuel economy compared to the 5.9...
I would rather have to dump a $3 bottle of urea juice in my truck every few thousand miles than an extra $3 gallon of diesel at EVERY fill-up. I'm glad Mahindra is going the DEF injection route, but I'm still worried that the promised 30MPG is going to end up closer to 22MPG with all the emissions and safety equipment the US government makes auto makers add to our vehicles. |
