Default Trailer towing capacity?

Register to stop seeing this ad!

I had planned to have a Mahindra truck share garage space with my 06 Jeep Liberty CRD (diesel) and occasionaly tow our camping trailer that weights 3500#. l just read that is can tow "1.38 tons" Thinking that was a strange way of advertising towing capacity I did the math. 1.38 tons is only 2760 pounds so that shoots down one of my two reasons for getting one

Am I missing something?

You are quoting the payload rating not towing. Payload of 2700 lbs and towing of 5-6k. you should be fine so long as you aren't going up too many mountains.

I really find it hard to believe this thing won't be a hazard to itself and anything else on the road while pulling 5k.
I would like it to be able to pull 3k with some decent ability.

Based on the reviews I've read on a non-US spec Mahindra pickup, it will have no problem with 3500 lbs… 5k should be doable also but 3500 certainly.

Peak HP and Torque come on at a relatively low RPM on the Mahindra. I think it's around 2400 RPM.

140HP and 236 lb-ft of torque at 2400 RPM

Consider that the peak torque and HP numbers for gas engines are at 4500-5000 RPM.

The Mahindra engine is putting out more HP and torque at 2400 RPM than any midsize truck V6, and even the baby V8s at 2400 RPM.

I personally think the Mahindra will do better with 5000lbs than most compact/midsize pickup trucks, midsize SUVs, etc... All are rated to tow 5000lbs.

My 4 popper tacoma can tow my trailer w/ a tracker on it and all my camping gear and a passanger. The truck tips the scale right around 4K. The trailer and all the crap is close to 4500 lbs, give or take. Pulls and stops fine (trailer brakes). It's just not all that fast! And the 4500 is over the factory limit for towing capcity. This truck with a good deal more power, will not have issue towing 5K.

Default Towing with a Liberty CRD.

I currently tow with my jeep Liberty CRD that has a 2800cc VM diesel with 4 valves per cylinder. Chrysler neutered it after selling them because of a weak torque converter. As is it does fine with my 3500# camping trailer untill I get to any kind of up hill grade. Then it shifts from 5th to 3rd gear and roars totally avoiding 4th. They retuned it to behave like a gas engine to avoid replacing torque converters under warranty. In the long run they would have been much better off because they only sold 14k of them in the US in 05/06 and they've gotten a lot of bad press Bean counter mentality
