Default Ford Ecoboost Engines

Been reading about the new ecoboost engines coming from Ford. Ford claims smaller gas engines will perform better because of diesel engine upgrades (turbo and direct injection). F150 will come with V6 and Ranger with 4 cylinder. Might be worth checking out.

Yea, I've read good things about them too. Evidently direct injection allows higher compression/boost without detonation and gives much better low end torque.

Not sure where you are reading that there will be Ranger with a 4 cylinder ecoboost. Everything I've read is that the Ranger is dead in the US.

I have read there may be an ecoboost 4 cylinder in the F150.

An 4 cylinder ecoboost in the F150 wouldn't be adequate in my opinion. The eco 6 that they are putting in there scares me too, just because I don't know if the engine can put up with the strain of trying to work like a V8.

If anything, ford should shove the eco 4 in the sport trac.

I mentioned the ecoboost engines yesterday. I am not really impressed since they are so under tuned. For the extra $3-4k they are charging there is not a lot of extra power. These need to be in a much higher tune if they are going to charge that much for them. With 2 turbos they need to be producing at least 130 hp per liter. They are right at about 100. There is an easy 100 hp left on the table with the 3.5.

I don't mind the 100 hp per liter thing if they were designed to be cheaper using smaller, less expensive turbos that aren't capable of more, that makes sense but Ford isn't doing that.

Ford is building these ecoboost engines with lighter weight materials, maybe they can't push the issue.

I guess we'll see if they'll hold up. Supposedly using diesel technology to help longevity.

I don't see the ecoboost costing $3-4K more in an F150. It's that much more in Flex and Taurus but the trim levels it is available in is much increased as well.

I've read it will be less than a $1k option.

for $1k then it can make some sense (still think the power is low but...) for fuel saving versus the 4.6 V8 with equally strong pulling power. I doubt we see tremendous fuel economy due to weight and aerodynamics but maybe 15 city 22 highway or 16/24 with taller gearing. that is well and good but I expect 23/30 with the mahindra.

Power for the 3.5 Ecoboost is supposed to be higher than the 5.4, both HP and Torque. Torque is supposed to come in low and the curve is almost flat to redline. Not sure what you are talking about lacking in power.

If they pushed them to get the 130HP per liter, the engine's longevity would suffer, I'd imagine.

100HP per liter is a good conservative path to take if you're building an engine to WORK, which these ecoboosts in F150s are destined to do.

It also leaves Ford with a lot of headroom to give the engines HP boosts every year or two without major redesign.
