Anyone see this post on PickupTrucks.com about Hyundai holding research clinics in CA and TX using a Ram 1500 with a Hyundai grill? No, this is not an April Fools joke again...

It sounds like they are NOT wanting Dodge to build them a Hyundai branded truck but it was a marketing concept to see if people liked the "look" of what a Hyundai truck might look like if they built one. I could see them in the global midsize market before I could see them in the US only full-size market. It makes more sense given their existing market to sell a midsize "world truck"

I think they are in the best spot to challenge the Taco/Hilux and the Frontier and Ranger.

Hyundai is testing the market, good. It could mean that Hyundai is doing research for a number of vehicles, positive or negative, large or small to see how the general public perceives their brand and their products. Hyundai is trying to predict which market segments will be increasing in 3, 5 and 10 years into the future. Hopefully, looking at green technology as well as present market trends Hyundai sees a product gap that needs to be filled that is presently under served when compared to the rest of the world, low cost high mileage trucks with or without a diesel. Europe and South America present a good indication what manufacturers could offer the US in this type of vehicle. Mahindra is first to step into this segment. It could be the sole product offered buy most likely it will soon will be followed by a myriad of choices. It is a good thing for us that want a Mahindra knowing manufacturers are not settled with their product lines and want to address their US product gaps.

It looks like they were talking to Chryco about the Ram platform for overseas stuff. Autoblog has a story up about the Hyundai cargo vans that Chryco uses around the world (south america I tihnk it said). No agreement was made for using the platform because either Chryco couldn't supply enough platforms or Chryco wanted Hyundai to take more platforms than they wanted.

I just think it makes sense for them to go midsize on the US market. I don’t understand why the full-size pickup space – that’s where OEMs have been putting most of their money when it comes to pickups. The midsize space on the other hand is ready for a new product. Well, I guess we’ll have to wait for Mahindra to deliver what we want: a rugged, utilitarian workhorse.

Maybe Hyundai could even make it more fuel efficient ? I would love to see them base a small truck of the Santa fe or Toyota build a truck based on the Highlander, the wifes 2010 does almost 30 mpg..
